Meet Al Simm, amazing metal sculptor who owns and operates Avon River Metalworks. If you are lucky enough to know Al personally you have experienced firsthand that the only thing that matches his expressive metal creations is his quick smile and awesome upbeat personality. Simply put Al is not only an awesome artist he is also a great guy.
With over 20 years’ experience working with metal, Al started Avon River Metalworks in 2002 and has been designing and creating artistic sculptures and functional architectural pieces for clients around the Maritimes. Avon River Metalworks is based in the beautiful Annapolis Valley region of Nova Scotia. This area is famed for its apple orchards and wide open spaces; much of Al’s work is inspired by the beauty and nature of the area. Known in the community for his beautiful work he has frequently been commissioned by the Town of Windsor to create artistic decorative pieces including his unique floral designs and has done numerous commercial and residential jobs.
Using a variety of metals including aluminum, steel and copper, Al incorporates found, discarded and recycled materials into his work. From glorious poppies and striking birds to substantial gates and railings, Al can bring beauty to any metal structure – functional or simply decorative.
His functional and architectural pieces can be found in Nova Scotian homes and businesses including the famous Whalesback residence in Duncan’s Cove and several lawn pieces at Phoenix Hollow B&B in Windsor. You can also enjoy Al’s work at many maritime locations such as The Harvest Gallery, 14 Bells Gallery, and the Osprey Gallery, as well as at his home studio and any festival he can be a part of including the NSDCC shows.
